The Newport Tower

The Newport Tower
Medieval stone tower ... in Rhode Island. Does it look like any other Colonial structure you've seen? Recent carbon dating of the mortar indicates 1400s construction date (see post below).

The Westford Knight Sword

The Westford Knight Sword
Medieval Battle Sword ... in Westford, Massachusetts. Can anyone deny the pommel, hilt and blade punch-marked into the bedrock?

The Spirit Pond Rune Stone

The Spirit Pond Rune Stone
Medieval Inscription ... in Maine, near Popham Beach. Long passed off as a hoax, but how many people know the Runic language? And how is it that some of the Runic characters match rare runes on inscriptions found in Minnesota and Rhode Island? Carbon-dating of floorboards at nearby long house date to 1405.

The Narragansett Rune Stone

The Narragansett Rune Stone
Medieval Inscription ... in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. This Runic inscription is only visible for twenty minutes a day at low tide--is this also the work of a modern-day, Runic-speaking hoaxster?

The Westford Boat Stone

The Westford Boat Stone
Medieval Ship Carving ... in Westford, MA. Found near the Westford Knight site. Weathering patterns of carving are consistent with that of 600-year-old artifact. And why would a Colonial trail-marker depict a knorr, a 14th-century ship?

The Kensington Rune Stone

The Kensington Rune Stone
Medieval Inscription... in Minnesota. Forensic geology confirms the carvings predate European settlement of Minnesota--so did Runic-speaking Native Americans carve it?

The Hooked X Rune

The Hooked X Rune
Medieval Runic Character ... on inscriptions found in Maine, Minnesota and Rhode Island. But this rare rune was only recently found in Europe. This conclusively disproves any hoax theory while also linking these three artifacts together.

Hi David,
I have emailed Scott Wolter a few times about the Newport Tower ~ I have read his book and plan on ordering yours this weekend. I use to live in Wayland and would have loved to have come to the library last night...I am fascinated with the tower. Can't wait to read your book!
Take care,
Ricci Semple

Hi Ricci:

You'll find much of the research in my book tracks Scott's--he and I have been collaborating for the past few years.

Turns out the Wayland event is going to be rescheduled due to the storms last night. Are you still in the area?

Unfortunately, no. I now live north of Atlanta, and I really miss New England. My dad and my husband's family still live around Mass. so we visit often. I fell in love with Newport on my first visit and we go back every summer. I never even knew the tower was there until I saw The Holy Grail in America, now I can't wait until June when we go to Newport so I can see it! We always stay at Longwharf resort, which is so close to the tower. Talk about something being right in front of you and not even knowing it is there! I just ordered your book and would love to come to one of your events...any chance your coming to the Atlanta area?

Ricci:

I have a similar story. My wife and I met in Newport, and got married there, but never knew about the Tower until I started my research.

Sorry, I'm not scheduled for any Atlanta appearances.

Hi,

My mother showed me the stone in westford that you reference when I was a little girl - I grew up in chelmsford. I thought you might like to know about a map that I found of the entire area you talk about - it actually shows all the high spots around westfords with elevation noted, copyright 1891. The book is in the Lathrop section of sturgis library, barnstable, Cape Cod - MA. It is the Atlas of Massachusetts by Geowalker Co. Boston. They would not let me make a copy of it because of it's age, but I drew a replica of it because I knew alot of the places it referenced i.e. Nashoba Hill is where I learned to ski - Francis Hill is near stony and tadmuck brook where I used to play and swim and spaulding hill near nabnasett pond where I learned to sail. Millstone hill, Kissacook hill and prospect hill 440 - the highest point in the area are all documented. It would be interesting to find these points and see if they have any markers. Well I live in Chicago now, but I enjoyed reading your book - it was close to home. Hope you get a chance to look at this old map - if not I'm happy to send you a copy of my drawing.

Sincerely,
Lori Lathrop

I just wanted to say I loved your book. My grandfather was reading it and once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. I had to go and get my own copy. I go to school in Providence and I would really love to see the Narragansett Rune stone but Im having trouble finding how to get to it. Any suggestions? I would also love to here you speak sometime. Will you be speaking in Rhode Island or Mass anytime soon?

Hi Ashley Q:

The Narrangansett Rune Stone is hard to find unless you know exactly where to look. Periodically the NEARA group has a field trip to visit the site--that's probably your best bet. (Go to NEARA.org for more info.)

Cominug up I'll be speaking at:

Shirley, MA Library, May 13

Tewksbury, MA Library, June 16

Reading, MA library, June 22

Glad you enjoyed the book!
